At the OSU Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) Clinic, we are dedicated to supporting the emotional and relational well-being of children, adolescents and their families. Our therapists use a developmentally informed, systemic approach that considers the influence of family, school, community and culture on a young person’s mental health.
Our Clinical Approach
We work with children and teens to address a wide range of concerns, including:
- Anxiety and emotional regulation
- Depression and mood-related challenges
- Behavioral concerns
- Family conflict
- School stress and academic pressure
- Identity development
- Grief and life transitions
Therapy often includes parental involvement, beginning with the first session and continuing throughout treatment based on the clinical judgment of the therapist. While caregivers may not be present in every session, their participation is considered essential to supporting the child’s progress and strengthening family relationships.
Consent and Legal Requirements
In accordance with Ohio law and the ethical standards of the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board, appropriate informed consent is required before beginning therapy with minors
- Written consent must be obtained from a parent, legal guardian or other authorized individual before treatment begins
- This consent must clearly outline the minor’s participation, the purpose of therapy and the roles of each family member involved
- In some cases, minors aged 14 or older may seek outpatient mental health services without parental consent. However, these services are limited to six sessions or 30 days, after which parental involvement is required
Our therapists are committed to maintaining confidentiality and will use their best judgment when determining how and when to share information with caregivers. We strive to balance the privacy of the child or adolescent with the needs of the family system.
